HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Temperatures will rise in this humid air mass ahead of a cold front pushing out of Western into Central Nebraska. Temperatures will rise into the 90s. With higher humidity, heat index values could climb to between 95° and 105°. Farther west behind the front, high temperatures in the 80s are expected. The humidity behind the front will be lower as well.

Late this afternoon and into the evening, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop near and just behind the cold front. These storms will advance east northeastward across the area. The chance for severe weather exists for all of Central and Eastern Nebraska as well as North Central Kansas. The chance will be greater the farther north you go. Initially, there’s a threat of large hail and perhaps an isolated tornado. As the night progresses, damaging wind gusts will become a greater threat. There’s also a chance for some localized flooding in North Central Nebraska.

Wednesday will be a less humid, but still very warm day behind the cold front. Temperatures start the morning on the cooler side ranging from the mid 50s west to near 70° east. We’ll see afternoon highs mostly in the upper 80s and lower 90s. Some early clouds will give way to mostly sunny skies.

For the rest of the long term forecast, temperatures will continue to heat up and humidity will return too. Starting Thursday night and continuing all the way through early next week, there will be several small hit or miss chances for showers and thunderstorms. Expect most areas to miss out though. Highs will mostly be in the low to mid 90s with lows mostly in the mid to upper 60s.
