Hastings High basketball program “rising together”
York native Drew Danielson begins stint as the new head coach of the Hastings High boys basketball team.
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings High basketball camps started this week. The camps mark the start of Drew Danielson’s stint as the head coach of the Hastings High boys basketball team.
Danielson comes from Cozad but is not unfamiliar with the Hastings area, playing for the Hastings College men’s basketball team from 2010-2014. Now he is back coaching the Tigers and said the team’s motto this season is “rise together.”
“It’s going to take a lot of people. It’s going to take a lot of youth coaches. It’s going to take a lot of middle school coaches. It’s going to take these seniors kind of getting things going in the right direction,” Danielson said. “It’s going to take a lot of sacrifice form our coaching staff. We’re rising together our whole program. That starts first with the first and second grade level.”
For the rising seniors on the team, they said it is an adjustment going from old head coach Lance Creech’s coaching style to Danielson’s.
“It’s very different. Coach Creech was more fundamental. Wanting to get the ball up the court slowly. Get our offense set. But Coach Danielson wants us to run and gun. Get the ball up the court as fast as we can. Play fast. Play energetic. Play positive,” Hastings High senior Landon Jacobus said.
Danielson said on top of building the program from the ground up, he wants to instill a positive environment where kids can have fun.
“We want these guys playing free. Playing with no fear of failure. Being able to go out and give their best for Hastings High and this community,” Danielson said. “Lastly, we want to put a product on the floor that the community of Hastings can rally around.”
Hastings basketball camps go Monday thru Wednesday. Danielson said the team heads up to Grand Island on July 9 for a team tournament.
