GPAC fall season to begin on schedule
The Great Plains Athletic Conference announced its fall sports season will start on schedule.
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Great Plains Athletic Conference announced its fall sports season will begin on time, with student-athletes reporting to fall camps and practices no earlier than Aug. 15.
Hastings College athletic director B.J. Pumroy said other leagues coming out with their fall plans made the GPAC want to announce their plans to go ahead with its original schedule.
“The public announcement arose from knowing other conferences around the country are facing their own different pressures compared to their directives from their local health departments or their state governments,” Pumroy said. “I think the GPAC wanted to say, ok we’re examining this situation but for our particular groupings we feel like we’re going to play this fall.”
Competitions are set to begin Sept. 5, with the football season beginning on Sept. 12. The NAIA released health guidelines all 21 conferences must follow when activities begin.
In the GPAC’s statement, conference commissioner Corey Westra said, “The GPAC will continue to closely monitor the ever changing landscape of Covid-19 as it relates to athletics at our member campuses this upcoming fall.”
Pumroy said athletic directors plan to meet Thursday, July 23 to discuss more details about the GPAC’s announcement.
