Katie Ruge wins Nebraska Women’s Match Play Championship
Katie Ruge beats Hannah Hunke in Nebraska Women's Match Play final to claim first Nebraska Golf Association title.
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Katie Ruge claimed her first Nebraska Golf Association title beating Hannah Hunke in the final by a 4-and-3 decision. She ended things on the 15th hole with a bogey after Hunke conceded the final putt.
“It was exciting. I knew I could pull it off with that hole. I knew if I just two putted and saved it, I ended up three putting but that was enough,” Ruge said.
Ruge is the second youngest golfer in the 97-year history of the event to win the title at 16-years-old. She is a junior at Millard North and entered the bracket as the three seed after shooting four over in the qualifying round.
On Wednesday, she birdied the first hole to go one-up. Hunke made it interesting winning the next two holes. However, Ruge won the fourth and fifth right after the weather-delay. She did not look back as she won with three holes to spare.
“I knew I could just play my game,” she said. “Strike the ball straight off the tee and put myself in good position for birdie. This is the biggest win I’ve had so it means a lot.”
Through her four matches in the tournament, she never trailed once.
