Heartland United Way hands out 9,000 free masks
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Heartland United Way partnered up with Grand Island Pubic Schools on Tuesday to make sure everyone is prepared for the pandemic.
They joined the district at six locations for their food handout and gave away nearly 9,000 free face masks. There was also instructions on how to properly wear one.
“We are encouraging people to cover the mouth and the nose,” Karen Rathke, President of Heartland United Way, told Local4 News. “A lot of times the mask will dip down and they’re still exposed so we’re just trying to let everyone know how properly wear it. Then it’s important that people wash it in between so any germs that are on the outside are gone completely.”
The giveaway was all possible due to a grant they just received from Blue Cross Blue Shield. The goal was to make sure everyone was geared up to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“We are using this opportunity to really be able to reach a lot of families who can benefit from the masks since GIPS is going to be encouraging masks be worn,” Rathke said. “We are happy to help with getting families those masks that they are going to be needing.”
If you missed the giveaway but are in need of a mask, you can contact Heartland United Way at (308) 382-2675.
