Salvation Army holding school supply drive
Items go to area students to ensure each student is prepared for the year
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings Salvation Army is holding its annual school supply drive for area students gearing up for the 2020-2021 school year and is asking for donations.
The drive runs through Aug. 7 and offers families and students in need a bag filled with necessary school materials. The Salvation Army isn’t getting every item from school supply lists, rather as many as it can as this year the drive is being held without partnering organizations.
“We are still looking for donations for school supplies. We need those,” Major Dale Brandenburg of the Salvation Army said. “Doing just on our own we know on, an average, we’ve been doing it for years, about how many people on average will stop by and ask so we had to cut down on the amount of supplies that we put in each bag to be able to supply for the amount of people who are coming in to get the school supplies.”
People in need are encouraged to call the Salvation Army, rather than show up, and make an appointment to receive their bag of items.
The Salvation Army is looking for the traditional items: folders, notebooks, pens and pencils, among other items.
On top of the drive, the Salvation Army will be hosting its first ever “Stuff the Bus” event in partnership with Walmart. It will take place Aug. 7-9 in front of Walmart on Osborne Dr. W with a box to place donated items in.
Stuff the Bus is to ensure anyone who may have missed out on receiving items from the supply drive still has an opportunity to receive some items for school.
“It just makes the child feel better, that ‘When I walk into class I’ve got what I need and I’m ready to go,‘” Brandenburg said.
