Grand Island construction project to change traffic patterns

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The City of Grand Island Public Works Department is announcing the intersection of North Road and Capital Avenue will be closed to through traffic starting Monday, August 10. Traffic will be detoured utilizing State Street, Highway 281, Highway 2 and Independence Avenue. Please avoid using Diers Avenue as a detour route as much as possible. North Road will be open to traffic from Highway 2 to Northview Drive, Grand Island Northwest High School, GC Mini Storage and Parks Veterinary Clinic.

While North Road will be open from Highway 2 to Northwest High School, be mindful of occasional lane closures and construction personnel along the opened portion of North Road. Residential access along North Road will be maintained at all times. Grand Island Northwest High School will enter and exit from Highway 2. Only residents will have access to North Road south of Grand Island Northwest High School’s driveways. Access to the Primrose Retirement Community’s south driveway will be from Highway 281 and Capital Avenue east of North Road. Access to the Primrose Retirement Community’s north driveway will be from Highway 2 and North Road.

The North Road project includes reconstruction from Capital Avenue to Highway 2. The project will consist of removal of the existing 24′ wide asphalt roadway and construct a concrete curb and gutter, 3-lane, 41′ wide roadway section. A roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Capital Avenue and North Road. The project will also include storm sewer construction, sidewalk improvements, water main adjustments and sanitary sewer extension at Northview Drive.

Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2020.

On March 10, 2020, City Council awarded the construction contract to Diamond Engineering Company of Grand Island for $3,335,787.35
