GRAND ISLAND (KSNB) - The Wood Shack Boutique is now open in Grand Island. Mary Cox-Coe said she put her heart and soul into the business, and wants people to enjoy it.

“People can come in and have fun. That’s what this is about, it’s to come in an have fun,” said owner Mary Cox-Coe.

When people visit the Wood Shack Boutique they purchase wood pieces of all shapes and sizes. All they have to do is buy the wood, and can decorate at the store using her supplies for a small fee. They can also purchase a kit of supplies to decorate at home. One customer, Jade Sandoval’s, first reaction to Cox’s store is “wow.”

“It’s really cool, amazing,” said Jade Sandoval. “I’ve been wanting to go to a store like this.”

Cox originally from Grand Island just moved back to the city. Over the last several years she has lived in many different places, and got the idea from a place she used to go to in Idaho.

“I went through a rough time and had a store like this there. I went in and said you know I need something to do and hire me, and they hired me,” said Cox. “This stuff helped me get through a rough time.”

She used art as therapy to get her through those times. It turned her pain into joy, and it gave her an escape from sorrow. With everything going on in the world right now, she hopes this store will provide the same escape for people in the area.

“I just hope I can bring something here, so other people can enjoy it as much as I do,” said Cox.

Cox spent the majority of her savings on the business. She bought the place a week before the pandemic hit, and had to wait until June to open. She also got laid off due to COVID-19 recently.

“I lost my job June 19, and then it’s like ok, I’m not making an income,” said Cox. “I sold my house in Idaho. I’ve used pretty much all of my money. I’ve taken out of my 401K.”

Even though its been hard the last few months, she hopes it will take off soon.

“I have faith that this is going to work and hopefully I can bring something fun to Grand Island,” said Cox.

The Wood Shack Boutique is located on 205 W. 2nd Street. in Grand Island. The boutique is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. People can walk in anytime to get creative, or they can call to make an appointment for an art class or to bring a party.
