Grand Island schools look to fill board seat

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Public Schools is seeking a Board of Education member for Ward B to replace Heidi Schutz.

“Mrs. Schutz let us know that her last meeting was August 13. She resigned due to accepting a job in another state”, said Dr. Grover, GIPS Superintendent.

When a board member resigns the remaining Board of Dducation members have the responsibility to interview and appoint a new member. Applications are due August 31 by 4:30 p.m.

Persons interested should have a genuine interest in and devotion to public education, a willingness to give time and effort to the work, a capacity for understanding people and the ability to work cooperatively with others. No member of the Board of Education shall be a certified employee of Grand Island Public Schools.

Interested applicants may go to the school district web site to complete the application. Applicants can also print an application, complete it and return it to Michelle Simmons, Kneale Administration Building, P. O. Box 4904, Grand Island, NE 68802 or msimmons@gips.org. If the application is mailed it must be received by 4:30 p.m. on August 31, 2020; not just postmarked.

The Board of Education will offer a workshop on August 30 at 2 p.m. Those interested in attending must respond no later than August 27. Respond on the form at the school district web site or by contacting Michelle Simmons.

The Board of Education will hold interviews on September 8 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The newly appointed board member will be seated on September 10 at 5:30 p.m.

The appointed applicant will finish the final four months of Schutz’s term, expiring January 6, 2021.The position is already on the November 3, 2020, ballot. Timothy Mayfield, Dave Hulinsky and Lisa Albers will appear on the November 3, 2020, ballot. If the person appointed is not on the November 3, 2020, ballot the appointee could pursue a write in campaign.
