Hastings College Women’s Soccer Preview
Broncos full of new faces, but expectations remain the same
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - When it comes to consistency, it’s hard to beat what the Hastings College women’s soccer team has been able to do on the pitch.
The Broncos have had 13 winning season in a row, and have finished in the NAIA Top 25 Polls each of the last seven years.
This year, they will be experiencing quite a bit of change, but they are still expected to have another strong season. They have been picked to finish third in the GPAC preseason polls. Although they haven’t gone a season without finishing in the top two in over ten years.
The biggest change heading into 2020 is who will be leading the program, as Jade Ovendale is taking over the reigns as the head coach. She plans on keeping that winning tradition going.
“Obviously a prestigious program, that’s exciting for any coach coming in,” Ovendale said. “Obviously you want to put your own stamp on stuff, but the culture here is already great so we’re just going to continue building on that.”
Ovendale is far from the only new face joining the Lady Broncos. 17 freshmen join the team this season, making up more than half of the roster. However, Ovendale isn’t too concerned about that.
“We’ve got a massive freshmen class coming in, so many people might see that as a weakness in a way, but I see it as a strength at the same time,” Ovendale said. “They have a lot of energy and they’re ready to prove they can play at the college level. With the upperclassmen, going back to culture, they know what the culture is like to win games and will steer them in the right direction.”
The team’s top returner is junior forward Jaqueline Gilbert, who scored nine goals and dished out four assists in 2019.
Hastings College open up their season September 9, at Lloyd Wilson Field against Kansas Wesleyan.
