BURWELL, Neb. (KSNB) - Burwell football is coming off their annual trip to Memorial Stadium. In 2019 the Longhorns went 10-3 finishing runner-up in Class D1 for the second straight season. It marked the fourth time in five seasons Burwell finished its season in Lincoln.

In 2020, head coach Luke Gideon returns six starters on offense and seven on defense. Key loss includes feature back Jase Williams who had 1,635 rushing yards and 35 total touchdowns.

They return two-year starter at quarterback, Barak Birch who threw for 1,41 yards and 17 touchdowns his junior season. Other key returners include juniors Cash Gurney and Tyson Dawe on defense. Both led the team in total tackles last season as sophomores.

“With all those guys being back it gives us a lot of experience that the year before or last year we had to go through those guys kind of rebuilding,” Gideon said. “So, this year we hope we’re a little further ahead.”

“Expect a deep run in the playoff,” Birch said. “We hope to get all the way back down to Lincoln again and this time come out with a win.”

Longhorns won their week one match up over West Holt, 50-15. They travel up north to Ainsworth for their second game of the season Friday, Sept. 4.
