HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - With limited time this off-season, college freshmen have needed to learn on the fly, which has been the case for the five freshmen on the Hastings College volleyball team.

Head coach Alexandra Allard said the freshmen have been adjusting well and she expects St. Cecilia grad Makenna Asher to play a role at setter along with Taylor Harrington from Nelson. Hastings College opened practice Aug. 15 and Asher said she knew she would have to hit the ground running.

“Towards the end of the summer we were able to get a few girls in the gym at a time, get some reps,” Asher said. “I think when preseason hit we knew we had to go hard every day and everyone was able to give it their all.”

For Coach Allard the biggest key to acclimate this incoming class was communication.

“This group is really good about communication,” Allard said. “It’s a two way street and I think the freshmen are coming in willing to talk. The upperclassmen are coming in willing to listen and guide them. Kind of be mentors to the underclassmen.”

Broncos open their season on the road against Mayville State University this Sunday, Sept. 6. Home opener for Hastings College is next Wednesday, Sept. 9.
