FBI investigating suspicious Grand Island package
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The FBI is investigating a suspicious package that forced the evacuation of the Hall County Administration building for a time Monday morning.
The Hall County Sheriff evacuated the building around 9 a.m. Monday. County workers and the public were allowed to return about 10:45 a.m.
Hall County Election Commissioner Tracy Overstreet told Local4 that the package was delivered to her office. The Hall County sheriff called in a Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad to the scene. FBI investigators were also on scene.
Late Monday morning, the FBI released a short statement.
“FBI Omaha agents in Grand Island are working with our law enforcement partners from several agencies regarding the suspicious package found at the Hall County Administration building. We cannot comment further at this time.”
It was not clear late Monday morning what, if any, device or substance was in the package. There was no explosion or any injuries as law enforcement investigated the scene.
After the area started to clear up, a hazmat team from the Grand Island Fire Department suited up to check the building.
Overstreet and the Hall County sheriff checked the contents of a ballot box outside the administration building. Election offices are expected to process a high volume of mail-in ballots due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Overstreet said she doesn’t think the incident will have any impact on operations at the Hall County Election Office.
“I think there is a lot of interest in the Nov. 3 General Election," Overstreet said. "I think a lot of people are really robust about it. Some people have really strong feelings one way or the other. What I would encourage people to do is participate in the process, but also do it respectfully.”
Beginning Oct. 5, the Hall County Administration building will become a polling site. Overstreet reminds people the polling sites are neutral places and to not to wear political attire while voting.
The Hall County Administration building is located at 121 South Pine in east Grand Island.
