Sherri’s Gym gets new location at Grand Island mall
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - During a time where local businesses struggling is a common topic, one Grand Island gym is flourishing. Sherri’s Gym just moved into a new location in the Conestoga Mall, with an open house Wednesday night.
“I have been all over central Nebraska teaching rec teams but we just started doing competition teams a couple of years ago and wanted to break out," Owner Sherri Ellsworth told Local4 News. “We just kept getting bigger and bigger. This was our chance to do so.”
The new location will host practices for their teams and classes for any child who wants to learn dancing or tumbling.
Ellsworth said this is a really exciting time for her squads because these last few months during the pandemic have been difficult as they work to practice but also keep each other safe.
“We are in each other’s faces and we touch each other so that’s hard," she said. “It’s hard to lift people without touching them. We have to be really careful about what we do. The competitions that we go to are in the spring so we’re really hoping that we get to perform in February, March and April.”
The team also has a national competition coming up next month in Oklahoma City which has not been canceled as of Wednesday night. Ellsworth said it looks like they will be going forward with it, but with a lot of changes.
“With social distancing and keeping it outside, we all have to be bubbled and everyone has to wear a mask," she said. "It’s just kind of the best we can do it without trying to increase the spread.”
