GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The VFW Auxiliary 1347 and Grand Island Express held another fundraising event for Wreaths Across America. This time they partnered with Platte River Harley-Davidson for a poker run on Saturday.

The bikers stopped in Hastings, Giltner, Marquette and Grand Island. They’re trying to raise $21,000 by Nov. 30 to purchase wreaths for every grave at the Grand Island Veterans Cemetery.

“Our Wreaths Across America and here is always a national day which is Dec. 19, and we’ll have a ceremony at the VFW, and then go down Capitol Avenue, and lay the wreaths,” Organizer Tammie Dimmitt said.

Organizers had a car show prior to this, but they didn’t quite reach their fundraising goal. They hope this poker run will help them get closer to buying those wreaths for their annual event.

“It’s just important to honor the veterans," Dimmitt said. "The motto with the Wreaths Across America is to remember, teach and honor. So we have a lot of kids that come out and teach them the respect of the veterans.”

People can call Dimmitt at (308) 398-8506 to make a donation, or they can mail a check to Wreaths Across America and send it to Grand Island Express at 432 S. Stuhr Rd.
