GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - For the first time in its 10-year history the softball co-op of GICC, Heartland Lutheran, Doniphan-Trumbull and Wood River is one of the last 24 teams left standing in Nebraska.

The Crusaders punched their ticket by taking down Wayne, the defending Class B state champions.

“I’m just so incredible proud of them," GICC softball coach Brock Culler said. "All the kids. Our coaches, the administrators everybody involved with this program had a piece to do with this over the years.”

They clinched the titled in dominant fashion winning 15-2 in the final game. But they had to overcome a four-run deficit in the seventh inning to down the Blue Devils in game one.

“I think it built up our confidence and we just believed in ourselves more," Senior pitcher Andrea Palma said. "So we just came into this game thinking we were going to blow it out.”

The Crusaders have been close to making it to the State Tournament the last decade but now in 2020 you can officially say they are heading to Hastings.

“We’re finally able to go and see the show in Hastings and we’re so excited," Culler said. "We’ve knocked on the door before but we cracked the code here. We’re going.”
