Lopers open season with win over MIAA preseason favorite
UNK edges Emporia State 59-54
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The University of Nebraska-Kearney Women’s Basketball team were picked to finish second in the MIAA Preseason polls, only behind Emporia State. It was only the fitting the two schools would meet in Kearney to open the 2020 season, and it was UNK that came out on top with the 59-54 win.
The Lopers (1-0) held a seven point lead at the end of the first quarter, and went into the half up by six.
That lead was extended to eight when junior forward Brooke Carlson hit a jumper early in the third quarter. The Hornets came back firing though, going on a 12-0 run, capped off by a Tre’Zure Jobe three-pointer.
The game was tied at 44 entering the final quarter, but it was the Lopers who threw the final punches, holding on to win it by five.
UNK, who returns every player from last year’s 26-6 team, had 11 players take the floor.
Point guard Haley Simental paced the Lopers, finishing with 15 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Maegan Holt tacked on 14 points as well, while Klaire Kirsch pulled in ten rebounds.
UNK will be back in action this Saturday at the Health and Sports Center when they play host to Washburn. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
