Downtown Hastings prepares for Small Business Saturday
Rewards offered for shoppers as businesses seek much needed boost
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Small, local businesses across the country will be hoping for a necessary boost this weekend as they prepare for Small Business Saturday.
The event officially runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in downtown Hastings shoppers can expect to see businesses doing all they can to get people in the doors and assist in boosting sales.
“It’s important every year to think about your local, small businesses because they’re your neighbors,” Tammy Orthmann, the Director of Hastings Downtown Center Association, said. “They’re the people who live next door to you...they contribute to local and state economy, too, but this year it’s very critical for obvious reasons.”
With fewer people going out to eat, for drinks, or out to shop, small businesses have been struggling throughout the pandemic. As a reminder to residents, there are ways to support the businesses without physically entering a store.
“Give them a call, find out if they have a website, if they’ll deliver, use social media to find out what’s going on inside their stores, message them, everybody’s very creative of getting their product out if they’re not comfortable getting in the store,” Orthmann said.
For shoppers in Hastings they can receive a “swag bag” on the corner of Hastings Ave. and 2nd St. before embarking on their day of shopping. If shoppers are “caught” downtown they could be handed $10 worth of downtown dollars. Shoppers will also be able to show their receipts at Blue Moon Coffee for their name to be entered in a drawing for $200 worth of downtown dollars.
