KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Entering the six-man championship game last Friday, Nov. 20, McCool Junction had never won a state football title.

Senior Owen McDonald changed that rushing for 396 yards and eight touchdowns in the Mustangs fifty-point win over Sterling. He also had an interception and led the team with eight tackles.

McDonald led McCool Junction all season. Entering the title game, he had rushed for 1,639 yards and 40 touchdowns.

The Mustangs knew the sting of losing in the title game after falling to Harvard in the 2019 six-man championship game, 50-33.

Because of that loss, they began the 2020 season with the motto, “Unfinished business.” On Friday they finished the job handing the town of McCool Junction (population: 428) its first football title.

McDonald finished the season with 2,431 all-purpose yards and 50 total touchdowns.
