HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Entering the 2020-21 season as back-to-back Class C-2 state champs, the St. Cecilia girls basketball team has a big target on its back.

The Hawkettes lost four starters from last year’s championship team.

Head coach Greg Berndt knows the beginning of the season will be important to figure out rotations, especially when they will get everyone’s best shot each night.

“Everyone wants a piece of us this year,” St. Cecilia senior Katharine Hamburger said. “We just have to come in with the mindset, one day at a time and just work every day. It’s 0-0 at the beginning of the year. So, we have to work to that goal every single year.”

“I think we’re talented but we don’t have a lot of experience in game situations,” Coach Berndt said. “With how disjointed everything is with some fresh faces it may take a little while to get going. But it certainly makes you feel a little bit better when you got some experience like Katharine and Bailey (Kissinger) coming back to maybe help the younger girls along.”

St. Cecilia begins its season Thursday, Dec. 3 at Columbus Scotus.
