2020 Male Athlete of the Year: Damen Pape
Damen Pape wraps up stellar wrestling career at Hastings High
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Last winter, Damen Pape closed the book on a incredible wrestling career at Hastings High when he won the Class B state title in the 182-pound division.
Pape ended his career with 202 wins, three shy of the Class B record and four shy of the all-time state record. He only had four losses in four years, three of which came his freshmen season.
“Mostly I try to stay cool calm and collected,” Pape said. “That’s when I feel like I wrestle the best. Not when I’m all hyped up or anything. It’s when I’m ‘chillax’ before my matches that’s when I wrestle the best.”
He closed out his time in Hastings winning 103 straight matches and helped the Tigers win the Duals and Class B team title for the first time in the same year.
“His goal growing up was ok I want to win a state title,” Hastings High wrestling coach Nolan Laux said. “After he got that it could have been alright I reached it I can kind of relax now. But now he has taken it upon himself to win another one it’s What’s next? What can get me to be the best wrestler I can be? That’s a special mindset to have and he’s really something to this program.”
Pape wrestles at the University of Northern Colorado, a Division I program that competes in the Big 12 in wrestling.
