Man identified after Monday accident in Grand Island
The driver of a semi-trailer truck died after his rig crashed with a pick-up Monday morning in south Grand Island.
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island police said the accident happened about 11:15 a.m. Monday morning at the intersection of highways 281 and 34 in the southwest part of town. Police said a south-bound pickup was turning left onto Highway 34 when it collided with the north-bound semi. The semi struck a nearby pole and rolled over. Its driver was killed. The pick-up also struck two other vehicles in the intersection. Emergency workers took the pick-up driver to CHI St. Francis hospital with undisclosed, but non-life threatening, injuries. The other two vehicles suffered minor damage. Injuries to the other drivers were not known, but were thought to be minor.
The semi was carrying liquid fertilizer for Stuart Fertilizer Company, which leaked from the tank. A hazmat team and the fertilizer company were called to the scene for clean-up. The intersection was partially blocked while emergency crews worked the scene.
The driver of the semi, Merle Liewer, 75 of Atkinson died at the scene. The driver of pickup, Nicholas Monferdini, 24 of Grand Island was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation is on-going as to what contributed to the crash.
