GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The pandemic has been tough in many ways, some have left marriages and others have even lost loved ones. Destiny Church in Grand Island has two programs they are opening up to the community to find support.

“Our pastor here, Tim Rust, has always had a vision and heart for being able to help the hurting,” Staff Pastor Jim Hammond said.

Hammond has been running the Divorce Care program since he and his ex-wife took it years ago. He said it helped them heal and begin to move on.

Just this week the church began the Grief Share program. It aims to give people who have lost a loved one the tools to begin their recovery and keep them from getting stuck asking the question ‘Where do I go from here?’. Virtual courses are now available to meet the need through the pandemic.

“If you’ve lost somebody in COVID this would walk you through the steps of hopefully being able to eventually find normalcy into life,” Hammond said. “Everybody talks about the new normal. The new normal is tough.”

People who take the 13-week class watch videos and share with a group what they are going through. Hammond wanted to start the grief course because he said everyone goes through loss at some point in their lives. The course does have religious influence but Hammond said it goes over basic principles and it is a welcoming environment regardless of beliefs.

“It isn’t about being in that group. it’s the fact that you are able to share with the community,” Hammond said. “People like hearts where they’re hurting, you’re able to share your hurt and you are able to share what’s going on inside of you. That’s where your healing comes from.”

He said the church knows the grand island community has seen some difficult days and they want to be there to help get to the road of recovery.

The courses do have a $20 fee to get the workbook but Hammond said if finances are an issue the church can work with them to get the materials they need.
