HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College men’s wrestling team was back in action hosting the Hastings Open on Saturday inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Thomas Stevenson (SR/Wailuku, HI) along with Taygen Smith (SR/Amarillo, TX) looked to be on a collision course at 157.
Stevenson won his first two matches by major decision defeating Edward Punzaian of Northwestern 18-9 followed by a 12-2 victory over Ryan McGinnis of Dakota Wesleyan. Then in round three of his semifinal match up against Grand View’s Zach Willey, he finally pinned him in the third period to advance to the championship.
Smith began his day with three straight major decisions by first defeating Blake Pomajzl of Northwestern 12-3. He followed that up by defeating Simon Enkbold of Doane 12-2 and then dominated Nick Immel of Wayland Baptist 16-4 to advance him to the semifinals. There he matched up with Giovianni Bonilla of Grand View where he lost a tough 4-3 decision and just missing out on an all Bronco final.
Due to a medical forfeit for Bonilla, Stevenson was able to take home the championship at 157. Smith had his day end in the consolation semifinals where he would get pinned by Luke Hardy of Briar Cliff as his day came to an end.The Broncos will be back in action Saturday Jan. 16 taking part in the GPAC vs KCAC duals hosted by Morningside in Sioux City, IA.
