Crews work to clear snow from Hastings roads
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - In places like downtown Hastings, there is still a lot of snow clean up to be done. Road crews spent most of the day Tuesday clearing residential roads around town.
With the deep snow and ban on parking going into effect, a lot of downtown businesses closed for the second day in a row. The removal of the snow piles downtown will begin at 10 p.m. and cars will be banned from parking 1st to 5th St from Burlington Ave. to Minnesota Ave.
As for the highways, crews are able to salt the road and clear snow from the sides. The department of roads said they struggled to keep them clear as the snow was still falling.
“One major issue we saw particularly with this storm was quite a few incidents where our trucks had accidents or crashes with other vehicles on the roadway and I think a lot of that had a lot to do with visibility combined with just the high amount of snow,” said Ben Merchant, District Operation and Maintenance Manager at the Nebraska Department of Roads.
Five snow plows were damaged in the accidents and two are still out for repairs. Road crews urge caution when passing the plows as they continue to clear the snow.
“We’ve been doing this a long time and we know what to expect but I think from the public perspective it takes a while to get the roads cleared off after the snow stops and that kind of the phase we’re in right now,” Merchant said.
The city of Hastings said the snow fell late into the night so some areas are behind schedule for cleaning. The downtown parking ban is in effect until noon on Thursday.
