FBI warns against romance scams
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The FBI is warning people this Valentine’s season against falling for romance scams. This specific crime led to a loss of $5.4M between Nebraska and Iowa in 2020 alone.
In most cases, the victim has met the other person online and has potentially had a record of communication with them, but they have never met in person. Then, once the scammer has developed as a romantic interest, they will ask for money, sometimes in large sums as a bank transfer, cash through the mail, or in gift cards.
There are things to look out for which should come as red flags. If the person refuses or comes up with excuses for not meeting in person, won’t meet on video chat, or won’t confirm their identity in other ways.
