Special Scoops boosting menu with unlikely partnership
YumYums make a comeback 60 years after restaurant’s closing
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Special Scoops opened in downtown Hastings roughly a year and a half ago and despite the weather and the pandemic, business is going fairly well.
“It’s been amazing, it just seemed like we were down to our last, ‘Okay how are we going to get here, how are we going to do this, how are we going to to stay?’,” Special Scoops Owner Donna Bieck said. “God provides a way.”
Special Scoops is trying to find menu items that people can enjoy during the winter and are difficult to find elsewhere.
That’s where Harriett McFeely, otherwise known as “The Bigfoot Lady” enters the picture.
McFeely’s parents owned The Iceberg in the mid-1900′s, a restaurant in downtown Hastings famous for its malts and yum yums - a different take on sloppy joes.
For years, McFeely held onto the recipe and is now giving it to Bieck so she can add it to the menu at Special Scoops.
“Just the night before I was reading in bed and I got to thinking about The Iceberg,” McFeely said. Those yum yums were so good...at 9 o’clock the next morning she [Donna] called me.”
Special Scoops is working on becoming a 501 C3 nonprofit, which will help business considerably in the winter months when business is inherently slower due to the products Special Scoops serves. In the meantime, Bieck hopes people continue supporting the business and that a larger menu will help.
