GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Grand Island firefighters union honored a Local4 reporter for an award-winning story about firefighter safety.

Shannon Heckt’s January 2020 story about the dangers first responders face when at the scene of roadway accidents tied for second place in the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Media Awards competition.

On Thursday the Grand Island chapter of the IAFF recognized Shannon for her report.

According to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute, 41 first responders were killed in “struck-by” roadway accidents.

Shannon’s report emphasized the danger that careless drivers pose to first responders at the scene of accidents. The story also pointed out the importance of compliance with Nebraska’s “move over” law, which requires drivers to move into the lane farthest away from a response vehicle.
