GISH to host in-person prom and graduation
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Senior High announced this week they will be hosting an in-person prom and graduation. The decision comes after students were very vocal about wanting this.
“Our class officers were great leaders and represented their peers very well by advocating for face to face events, primarily commencement and prom,” Executive Principal Jeff Gilbertson said.
For the senior class president, Diana Barragan, the idea of an in-person prom was really important to her.
“I was very scared that we were going to not have anything in person and miss out on our best year of high school,” Barragan said. “When I became class president, I knew I could have a part in that and try to make it better.”
Barragan moved to the United States from Mexico when she was 14, and this dance is one she’s been looking forward to for years.
“Regularly I would watch movies about the us and they made prom look like such an amazing thing and I was like ah I want to be a part of that,” she said. “When I moved here and heard we were going to have one, I was really excited. Now that I get to plan it, I’m even more excited about it.”
With prom and graduation both being in person again, the school said they are hopeful about bringing back some normalcy for their students.
“We’re cautiously optimistic. Our protocols aren’t going away completely, we’re staying the course,” Gilbertson said. “In fact, that’s what allowed us to stay in school - our tight protocols. Definitely we can see some light at the end of tunnel that we’re going to get through this not only as a nation, but as a school district.”
Prom will be from 8 to 12 on April 17. Graduation will be held outdoors at Memorial Stadium on May 16.
