HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Start Over Rover in Hastings raised over $16,000 with the help of a national charity organization called Jordan’s Way. They were one of eight Nebraska shelters that are getting the focus from Jordan’s Way.

The charity has gotten national attention and founder Kris Rotonda has been on The Dodo and the Hallmark channel promoting it. He is on a mission to travel to all 50 states and raise money for animal shelters along the way. He started the organization after his own experience of adopting a shelter dog.

“Jordan was a dog I adopted back in 2008,” Rotonda said. “She was in a rescue for three years and she inspired me to make the unnoticed, noticed. So when she passed away in 2018, I was just inspired to start an organization around it.”

Start Over Rover was nominated by some members of the community and Rotonda was live for four hours on Facebook calling out local businesses and anyone who would donate towards their $15,000 goal.

“I have said before we are so fortunate,” Start Over Rover Co-Founder Anne Halbert said. “We have a great community here and they have always been so supportive and that’s why we are able to keep doing what we do so it’s just awesome seeing that.”

Rover has had a challenging year with the pandemic, a major influx of animals during the cold snap, and a partial ceiling collapse from the weather. Halbert said they were excited to bring the spotlight on the importance of shelters.

“I think it’s amazing that there is somebody that this is what they devoted their time to,” Halbert said. “It not only raises money but it raises awareness about homeless animals, adoptions, shelters, and things like that. I think that’s so important to continue to get the word out.”

Rotonda had fun with setting challenges of reaching an amount to smash whip cream pies in faces and give the animals special treats.

Halbert said the money is going to mean a lot to them and it will help with some repairs, fence replacement, and the day to day operations. She is so thankful for Jordan’s Way for selecting them.
