Hawkettes’ three-peat falls short in C1 championship
St. Cecilia lose to North Bend Central in Class C1 championship game, 51-49
LINCOLN, Neb. (KSNB) - Hastings St. Cecilia suffered its first loss in the Girls State Tournament since 2018 this morning when the fell to defending Class C-1 state champs North Bend Central, 51-49.
Bailey Kissinger’s layup at the buzzer hits off the backboard as the Hawkettes let an 11-point lead slip away in the fourth quarter. Kissinger finished with a game high 33-points.
The loss ends an incredible run for St. Cecilia who lost four starting seniors from last years team who won back-to-back titles in C-2.
“A lot of people told me that the expectations weren’t really high from the outside,” St. Cecilia girls basketball coach Greg Berndt said. “Now from the inside, it was a completely different story. Anytime you have ultra competitive kids like we do, good things can happen. I’m proud of them. This team’s legacy is kind of defying the odds I guess in some people’s minds, but in our own minds I think we did exactly what we thought we could do.”
The Tigers did their damage at the foul line at Pinnacle Bank Arena. They hit 14 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter and went 21 of 27 in the game. North Bend Central was led by sisters, Kaitlyn and Sydney Emaunel who combined for 39 points.
Hawkettes (24-3) return its entire team but lose senior Katharine Hamburger who will play for the Hastings College women’s basketball team next winter.
