GICC Girls to keep Kevin Mayfield as head coach
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Take the interim title away and just call him coach.
After taking over the Grand Island Central Catholic girls basketball team late this past season, Kevin Mayfield says he isn’t going anywhere. Monday, the school made the decision to keep Mayfield at the helm.
Mayfield took over for former coach Stacia Rice more than halfway through the season, and he admitted that it wasn’t exactly a smooth transition for him or the team. He acknowledged the situation as unfortunate, but knew it was something both he and the team could overcome.
Now, he’s ready to win over the Crusader fan base - if he hasn’t already.
“I’ve really enjoyed the last five to six weeks that I’ve worked with the girls,” Mayfield said. “I thought we had a really good rapport with each other, and I just thought this would be a good chance to get my feet wet again.”
The GICC girls entered as the top seed in the Class C1 State Tournament before being upset by #8-seed Winnebago in the opening round.
