Franzen ushering in new era of Broncos football
Hastings College football preparing for spring game against Benedictine College
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Matt Franzen has the unique opportunity to coach his first game in April as the new head coach of the Hastings College football team. Franzen comes from Doane University where he was the Athletic Director since 2018 and coached the football team from 2007-2017.
Now, he is back in Hastings after he was an assistant coach for the Broncos for 11 years.
“It all comes back to relationships and trust,” Franzen said. “But I think if we’re consistent as coaches every day, In how we do what we do and what we expect then the players are going to trust the process.”
“He’s just very straight to the point, to me he’s very straight to the point,” Senior running back Tyree Nesmith said. “He doesn’t really focus on what we did good although he will congratulation us. He’s just more so fixing the mistakes so we can be perfect and sound.”
Nesmith and Chance Bollen are the only seniors returning for a fifth year. Frazen said the team is young at offensive and defensive line but their game against fifteenth-ranked Benedictine College will be a nice test to see what he has.
“It’s a preview of the team that’ll we’ll have here in the fall,” Franzen said. “The guys are excited to play. The team we’re gonna play is really good. We realize that going in when we accepted the game. But we’re looking forward to getting out on the field like I said with our new team and taking the first step.”
“It’s going to help us because it will help us prepare and get our body ready to be hitting in the fall,” Nesmith said. “I mean overall I don’t have too much to say it’s just a great day to be out here playing football.”
Broncos travel to Benedictine College on Saturday, April 10. Kickoff set for 2 p.m.
