Couple of 44 years marries in Grand Island ICU
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A couple in Grand Island that’s been together for more than four decades has tied the knot in the CHI Health Saint Francis ICU.
The super sweet love story started 44 years ago, but Marta and Julio Chamul just got married on March 26th. The two were surrounded by their nurses, a grand child and a whole lot of love.
They met back in the 1970s and have been through thick and thin. Recently that includes more than a month stay in the hospital after Julio was diagnosed with COVID-19.
“His wife Marta was up here every single day with him from morning to evening then she would go home and sleep and be back the next day,” RN and bridesmaid Hannah Kobarik told Local4 News.
Marta said when looking for a partner, she just wanted someone who made her happy and Julio has done that since day one.
“Whenever I thought about getting married or whoever it was I wanted, I always want to make sure that person loves me and cares for me,” she said. “We’ve been happy all the time since we met.”
Hospital staff says they felt honored to be a part of the special day and to share in that celebration with them.
“I thought being a part of it was big for them trusting us here at the hospital to put on their wedding,” Kobarik said. “It was very sweet of them.’
Julio is still recovering in the ICU, but the happy couple says they cannot wait to get home and be together again.
