SHELTON, Neb. (KSNB) - For most of us, we got lazy during the pandemic turning on the TV or taking the extra naps, but for Shelton teen Christian Bly, he set up shop in his wood shop.

“I was always creative in things I wanted to build and grandpa would always have to help me,” Christian said.

He didn’t need help for very long. After just one shop class at Shelton High School, Christian started turning out pieces that raised some eyebrows.

“We were just blown away by just the detail of the item that he had, so we just asked him if that was something he wanted to do more,” said Aaron Bly, Christian’s dad.

Christian did a lot more, eventually creating a “Nebraska Home” design, so Aaron said why not toss it up on Facebook.

“Within like a half hour he had like 20-some orders, and we were like ‘oh man, I think he might have found the first one that really hit hard,’” Aaron said.

“I was shocked, it was crazy,” Christian added.

Once it took off on social media, the in-person orders picked up too.

“My coach, he wanted a Shelton Bulldogs Track sign, so I built that for him,” Christian said. “I just had a recent Outkick 360 sign for a person in Tennessee.”

It quickly set in that not only was Christian skilled at woodworking, but he could make some money out of this venture.

“This is something that he could do for the rest of his life as a side deal, or he could make this a full-time job,” Aaron said.

If you’re reading this story, and you want to order your own sign - you can get it on short order according to Christian.

“I like being pressured of doing signs, so if there’s a deadline, I’ll get it done by then,” he said.

However, for a kid who’s involved in multiple high school sports as well as clubs and of course classes, it’s not all woodworking when he’s home.

“Yeah, I like going kayaking instead of working, but I like this too,” Christian said with a wry smile.
