Hastings College drops non-conference game to Sterling College, 7-2
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College baseball team competed in its final non-conference game of the season losing 7-2 to Sterling College on Tuesday night on Duncan Field.
After falling behind 2-0, Tyler Hobbs (SR/Littleton, CO) Broncos would keep the Warrior bats from doing any more damage while the Bronco bats would eventually tie the game 2-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Tino Zach (SR/Elkhorn, NE) got things going with a double and later advanced to third on a ground out. Zach then scored on the Kasey Ohnoutka (JR/Lincoln, NE) RBI single to make it 2-1.
Hobbs continued to deal keeping Sterling at just the two runs into the seventh. There, HC picked up a clutch two out single up the middle from Cory Koranda (JR/Lincoln, NE) to score Ohnoutka from second to tie the game 2-2.
In the eighth, a lead off single would chase Hobbs and then things began to unravel for the Broncos as the Warriors scored five runs in the eighth to pretty much put the game out of reach.
Hastings did manage to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth but Cole Staab (JR/Kearney, NE) would fly out to left ending the game at 7-2.
This was Hobbs’ longest outing of his career going 7.0 innings giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out five. His longest outing prior to this game was 4.0 innings last year against Northwestern.
Tim Fitzgerald (SR/Liberal, KS) and Koranda each had two hits in the loss with Koranda recording a RBI.
Hastings falls to 12-26 (10-14) on the year and will be back in action Friday April 30 at No. 22 Concordia comes to town for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m. on Duncan Field.
