HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Central Community College celebrated their new students in Hastings on Wednesday. Roughly 100 people showed up for a signing day ceremony, many of them being sponsored by local companies.

That means not only will they graduate with minimal student loans, they’ll also have a job lined up for at least two years after graduation.

Heath Perez is just one of the many incoming freshman going through college sponsored by NMC Cat.

“I looked into it and found the diesel technology program and kind of asked more about it and they said it was an amazing program,” Perez told Local4 News. “I’m just really excited to get started.”

The company will shell out thousands of dollars for their students education, and also providing hands on training before they even graduate.

“We bring them in the summer after they graduate high school for an internship,” NMC Talent Acquisition Specialist Rachel Farner said. “After that we pay for tuition, books and fees for our students to go to school. We provide with the internship opportunities when they’re in school and once they graduate, they come to us to a full time position.”

This year the company is looking for diesel technicians. It’s a job that’s in high demand, but also very difficult to fill.

“Diesel technicians are needed right now more than ever,” Farner said. “The gap between the amount of companies that need diesel technicians and the amount of qualified diesel technicians out there continues to grow.”

Thankfully there’s many incoming students ready to train and fill those positions.

“I’ve always had a passion for mechanic,” Zach Smith, another student preparing to start the program, said. “Growing up I’ve always helped my dad in the garage doing stuff.”

He said he really recommends sponsorships to other high school students.

“I think it’s really crucial to becoming a mechanic,” Smith said. “You can get a lot of things paid for and make connections with a good company, whichever you choose to do.”
