CENTRAL CITY, Neb. (KSNB) - In the spring, Kernel Field has hosted the Central City/Fullerton/Centura baseball team for four years. With Tres Gonsior a part of the entire ride.
“Tres was one of the original freshmen when we started four years ago,” Kernels baseball coach Brandon Detlefsen said. “He’s been a key kog to the whole thing from the beginning.”
Baseball is known as a game of routine and Gonsior has his own unique pregame ritual.
“I drink two Red Bulls before every game,” he said. “The first game I bought two red bulls, I threw a no hitter and hit a home run. So, every since then I’ve been drinking two Red Bulls before every game.”
With the power of the wings, Gonsior is second on the team with a 2.89 ERA and 57 strikeouts while going up against the toughest competition in Class B.
“He has a very strong arm,” Detlefsen said. “He moves his balls around a lot. He’s able to locate his off-speed pitches very well.”
Gonsior is part of a two-headed monster with junior Kale Jensen who leads the team in batting average with .592. Batting behind Jensen no doubt has an effect on Gonsior’s at-bats.
“Usually I’m batting with the bases cleared so that is about the only thing that it effects,” Gonsior said.
With limited chances to get RBIs, Gonsior is second on the team with 27, only eight runs behind Jensen.
“You have two guys batting over .450 right beside each other and it’s just amazing having those two college level type players hitting right behind each other,” Detlefsen said
Gonsior is committed to Division II school, University of Sioux Falls. Before he can get there, him and the Kernels await the winner of Omaha Gross Catholic and South Sioux City on Friday in their B-6 district game.
