GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Grand Island Senior High Mariachi Band serenaded residents at Bickford Senior Living on Wednesday, performing five folk songs for them.

Bickford Senior Living reached out to Senior High awhile back to perform for Cinco de Mayo. GISH Junior Jean Garfio joined the band to honor is Mexican roots.

“It really humbles me as a person to know that my ancestors listened to this type of music,” Garfio said. “For me to play it in front of other people is like a dream come true.”

Garfio said being able to share music from his culture was a blessing.

“It’s not very often with the pandemic that we get to be out like this, you know, and just to see the smiles on their faces was you know brought a smile to my face as well.”

Coming up this Sunday, the band is also performing at the Cinco de Mayo Festival on Fourth Street.

“This was actually kind of a run through for us as an ensemble to get used to playing out in the elements with the wind, the fresh air, you know, the sprinkling of rain,” said GISH Mariachi Band Instructor Kelly Coslet.
