HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Entering the spring, Hastings baseball had plenty of question marks surrounding the team. The Tigers graduated 13 seniors last spring who were on their 2019 Class B runner-up roster. This year they returned 12 seniors

After a 1-3 start, they have won 17 of their past 19 games. The game plan this season has been balance in the lineup and on the mound. They do not have a dominant hitter with runs spread evenly across the board. On the mound, their top pitchers all have sub 1.50 ERAs.

With districts in front of them, Hastings is keeping the recipe the same.

“We don’t have that big name up and down our lineup: pitching, defense or hitting,” Hastings baseball coach Blake Marquardt said. “But ‘god lee’ we have six or seven guys that I think now are hitting well above .330 and two guys right around that .400 mark.”

Luke Brooks leads the team batting .403 with Cameron Brumbaugh not far behind batting .382. Brooks and Trayton Newman led the team with 23 RBI. Seven guys all have double-digits in RBI.

The real success for Hastings has come on the mound as Markus Miller leads the team with a 0.86 ERA. Brayden Mackey and Trayton Newman have a 1.42 and 1.50 ERA, respectively.

“We all work together to get the W at the end of the day,” Newman said. “We all have to pick each other up. Get the next guy up at the plate is a big part of it. Trust your teammates that are behind you and that’s what we’ve been doing all season.”

Marquardt said Newman is starting for the Tigers in their district game tomorrow, May 7.

Hastings hosts Concordia/Brownell Talbot/Omaha Christian Academy (12-10) at 2:30 p.m.
