Kernels advance to State Baseball Tournament for first time in program history
Central City/Fullerton/Centura baseball beats Platteview in B-6 District Championship, 2-0
CENTRAL CITY, Neb. (KSNB) - Central City/Fullerton/Centura is heading to Werner Park for the first time in program history. The Kernels beat Platteview in the Class B-6 District Final, 2-0.
Junior star Kale Jensen pitched a complete game, striking out 13 batters and allowing only three hits. It was his tenth win this season which tied the Class B state record for wins in a season (Logan Ehlers, Nebraska City, 2009; Jacob Uhing, Elkhorn, 2016).
The Kernels struck in the first inning off Jensen’s RBI single. They did not score again until the sixth inning with Carter Noakes drawing a bases-loaded walk to add an insurance run heading to the seventh.
Jensen got the final out with runners on second and first as the Kernels hoisted the B-6 District trophy on their own home field.
“This is huge. Starting a program four years ago and having three full years of the program to be able to be district champions after that it’s just amazing,” Kernels baseball coach Brandon Detlefsen said.
“We knew going into this season that we had a lot of talent and had a chance to do something special,” Jensen said. “But going to state that’s really special and it means a lot.”
The first round of the Class B State Baseball Tournament starts next Saturday, May 15. Match-ups have not been set.
