HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - After starting the year 1-3, the Hastings Tigers baseball team won their last 18 out of 20 games, and had the opportunity to go to State with a win on Saturday.

It was a pitcher’s duel for the first five innings. Hastings’ Brayden Mackey was lights out on the mound for the Tigers, holding Wayne to zero runs.

In the sixth inning, the Tigers bats woke up. Mackey hit a grounder to the second baseman, and when the Blue Devils tried to turn two, the shortstop sailed the return throw over the first baseman’s head, scoring Evan Rust.

The Tigers would tack on two more runs in the inning, and Markus Miller would shut down the Blue Devils in the top of the 7th, preserving the 3-0 victory.

“This team has worked extremely hard,” coach Blake Marquardt explained after the game. “They’ve come a long way from the get go. [We didn’t] know where this team could end up, but we all had high hopes for this team. To be able to watch them dogpile at the end of the game was the most rewarding part of the season.”

“No one expected at the start of the season we’d be in this number one seed, [and win] our district,” said Mackey. “No one expected it, so it just feels great to be able to be in this position today.”
