Kernels season ends in heartbreaker to Ralston
Central City/Fullerton/Centura loses to Ralston at State Baseball Tournament, 6-5
OMAHA, Neb. (KSNB) - Central City/Fullerton/Centura baseball experienced its first heartbreak in the State Baseball Championships at Werner Park. The Kernels entered the seventh-inning with a 4-1 lead before allowing five-runs to Ralston. They went on to lose in eight innings, 6-5.
The loss ended a standard-setting season for the Kernels who made it to State for the first time in its four-year history.
“Not a lot of people expected us to be down here. We just took advantage of our opportunities,” Kernels baseball coach Brandon Detlefsen said. “We were able come down here, finish top-six in the state. This is something to be extremely proud of. I told the guys when the hurts wears off, they’re going to look back on this moment and be really proud of themselves.”
The Kernels struck first in the third-inning off RBI hits from Carter Noakes, Kale Jensen and Tres Gonsior to take a 4-0 lead. Gonsior started on the mound, pitching 6.0 innings and only giving up a run.
Noakes entered to close out the game in the seventh but the Rams took advantage scoring five-runs to take a 5-4 lead. The Kernels responded with Jackson McGinnis’ sac-fly to tie the game at 5. McGinnis’ hit fell only a few feet short of the fence.
In the eighth, Max McNichols RBI single gave Ralston a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Jensen led the inning with a walk before Gonsior almost hit a two-run walk off home run. Gonsior was later hit to put runners on first and second. Kellen Fries grounded into a game-ending double play.
The Kernels end their season with a record of 20-7.
