Police agencies partner for Click It or Ticket campaign

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Nebraska police agencies have partnered once again for their annual Click It or Ticket campaign.

Each year officers use this time to raise awareness on the importance of wearing a seat belt. The campaign comes as summer starts and more people are on the road. This year surrounding states are on board as well.

“Several other states have joined in with the state to state project,” Nebraska State Patrol Captain Jeff Roby said. “Not just Nebraska but bordering states are sending out the same traffic messages to wear your seat belt, be cautious on the road, be sure not to use your cell phone or anything like that when you’re driving and just be aware of your surroundings.”

Seat belts are proven to increase your chance of surviving a traffic accident. According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, last year there were 132 unbuckled people who died last year in crashes.That’s 78% of 2020 traffic deaths.

Officers say it’s so important to buckle up every single time you get in the car.

“It’s not just on the interstate where people think the higher speeds play a factor, which they do,” Capt. Roby said. “But also our rural areas, our county roads, our state highways, wearing your seat belts out there to make sure you don’t become one of those statistics of a fatality.”

This campaign is made possible each year by a grant through the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office.
