Hastings Aquacourt enjoying added customers amidst heatwave
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - With record temperatures likely for some towns in Nebraska this week, the desire to hit the pool is greater than ever. Over at the Hastings Aquacourt, they’ve been doing their best to battle the heat.
As expected, it’s been a pretty busy year already since opening, especially after the water park decided to close for the entire last year due to COVID. Staff there says it’s just great to see people enjoying the water again, even if it’s not so great for your utility bills.
“You know, we’re always hoping it’s hot outside so people can come to the pool and enjoy it,” said Ryan Martin, the Hastings Recreation Superintendent. “You know, in the past years we’ve had cool seasons, so this year with the heat it’s definitely been good for us, and we definitely gotta make sure our staff is taken care of and staying cool and hydrated as well.”
The only strain on the Aquacourt is its continued low staffing. Right now..the they have around 20-30 lifeguards, but during normal years, it’s above 50, so park managers are taking notice and making sure everyone stays safe.
“We’re trying to find ways to keep them cooled down,” Martin said. “Sometimes, it’s a little bit less on each station as they rotate. Just giving them water and Gatorade, trying to keep them hydrated as much as we can during the hot days. Just keep them cool and just trying to keep them happy and in the pool as much as we can. It’s been good so far.”
While lifeguard safety is one of the top priorities at the park, Martin says they’re still loving the heat and the added customers.
