HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - It’s a blank canvas of sorts in southwest Hastings, as the redevelopment project at the old Imperial Mall property is well underway. The demolition of most of the facility began back in November of 2020, and all that’s left of the area is the old K-Mart building which will be repurposed.

Next in phase one of the project is the new 75-unit apartment project targeted toward residents aged 55 and older, which Hastings Mayor Corey Stutte says is very needed for the city. The project also comes with a little bit more nostalgia for Stutte as well, considering he’s a hometown guy.

“You know, I grew up here in Hastings,” Stutte said. “I ended up going to lunch quite a few times. I spent a lot of time at the mall. When I moved back, it was kind of sad to see the shape that the mall was in, so it’s really great to see it come back to live with the opportunities that this development is going to provide this property here, and also the great amenities it’ll provide the citizens of Hastings, so we’re really looking forward to seeing this come to fruition.”

The project is also on schedule, with the apartments set to be built soon.

“Well, from what we understand, they plan on starting construction this summer or early fall and hopefully they’ll have the apartments up and open here within the next year, so we’re really looking forward to that,” Stutte said. “Obviously they’ll be working on the commercial and business property as well, whether it’s small stores or developments - whatever the case may be. I just know they’re working hard to bring those to Hastings.”
