Cruise Nite hosts assisted living tour in Kearney
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The annual Cruise Nite week of events returned to Kearney this week with their first event kicking off Tuesday evening. Then on Wednesday car enthusiasts were on the move for their assisted living tour.
This portion of Cruise Nite hasn’t always been part of their annual events, but they started it up about five years ago for people who may not have been able to leave their homes.
Carl Lewis is a resident at Homestead Assisted Living, which was the first stop on the tour. He and his neighbors spent their evening watching the vintage cars drive from the comfort of their front yard.
A car enthusiast himself, he said he’s thankful Cruise Nite organizers have added the assisted living tour to their agendas.
“This is fantastic for all of us,,” Lewis told Local4 News. “It brings back so many memories because most of us have had one or more of these kinds of cars.”
As much fun as it is for the residents to see the cars passing by, the drivers say they also enjoy that experience.
“It’s very gratifying to me personally and I’m sure to the other people who are involved this evening,” Cruise Nite Chairman Brad Kernick said. “It’s very gratifying to see the smiles on their faces, to bring a little happiness, a little joy, a little fun to their lives. That’s priceless, that’s cool.”
This is the 15th year Kernick participated in Cruise Nite events and he said he’s enjoyed watching it grow over the years.
“Cruise Nite has grown very aggressively,” he said. “It started as a one-day car show with a dance that evening. Then it went from one day to two days. Now it’s parts or all of some days and evenings.”
There are several more days of Cruise Nite events. You can view the full schedule here.
