Hastings YMCA offers free membership to sixth graders
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings Family YMCA is helping provide entertainment for kids by offering sixth graders free membership. The kids can come in and use the swimming pool, the basketball courts and more.
The facility has been offering the free program since 2019 — when they had between 100 and 200 middle schoolers sign up. When COVID-19 hit, Rich Williams, membership director for the Hastings YMCA said the offer hasn’t been as popular.
“I’m about at 26 kids, which is mind-boggling with a town of 26,000 people,” Williams said. “But, it’s been on my top list to be able to get into the schools. I’ve talked to my boss, Troy to be able to set something up to where I can go to these schools, meet with these classes...”
Though the decrease in numbers Williams said there are reasons why they’ve kept up the free membership offer to the community.
“That fifth grade class doesn’t always get to meet other kids from other schools, so I think this is a great opportunity for kids to come to the YMCA, build those relationships, so when they go into sixth grade you know, new school, middle school, new kids, they’re building that trust already for themselves,” Williams said.
The free membership lasts a year, and to get signed up, people can fill out an application on the Hastings YMCA’s website, hand in the completed form at the “Y” and bring the sixth grader who would like the free membership along with.
