Ravenna plant shop places second at Buffalo County Fair
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The Buffalo County Fair still went on this weekend and there were plenty of food and rides but there was also plenty of interesting businesses selling merchandise. One of them happened to sell plants.
Owner Tara Jakob had no idea what these plants were.
“Believe it or not, a year and a half ago I had no idea what an air plant was,” Jakob said.
It wasn’t until she learned about how easy they were maintain and how much they could transform any room when she decided to open her own shop in Ravenna called The Rooted Farmhouse.
“I just think they’re just beautiful,” Jakob said. “They just brighten up the house and the air plants are so fascinating for me because you just take one thing and put it in a cup, a jar or just anything you have around the house and you have this beautiful ornamental and it took you two seconds.”
Fast forward to now, she’s selling them at places like the Buffalo County Fair this year.
“We just started selling the air plants in the store about a year ago and now they are probably 80% of the sales,” Jakob said.
In addition to selling air plants, Jakob also sells cacti and succulents but nothing else.
“Like the air plants they don’t need any soil,” Jakob said. “Just to see the look on people’s faces when they say, “how do they survive with no soil?” It’s just, it’s cool to explain that to people.”
This was actually Jakob’s first time selling her plants at the fair but she wasn’t the only one. When Local4 talked to the organizer Stephanie Vavra she said they were showcasing entirely different vendors compared to years past.
“Unfortunately with Covid, there’s a lot of residual that comes with it and we lost a lot of friends that have done direct sales for years and so now we’re rebuilding and people are trying new things and we’re going to get a lot of different people in here,” Vavra said.
Jakob took home second place for the best vendor booth this year. The Buffalo County Fair is going on again this week. For the full schedule of events click here.
