Tri-City officers celebrate National Night Out
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - All across the country people celebrated National Night Out on Tuesday. In the Tri-Cities, first responders were out there with them.
Officers co-hosted a big community gathering in Hastings and Kearney. In Grand Island, officers stopped by several block parties that were happening.
“We’re just bouncing around the city visiting people, eating some of their good food and just kind of hanging out,” GIPD Officer Jason Wood said.
Officers said night like that are a great opportunity for the community to get to know them.
“We are friendly people. Once we take off the uniforms, we’re just like everybody else,” HPD Corporal Nathan Hanson said. “We’re parents, brothers, sisters. We just want the kids to feel comfortable coming to us if they ever need help or anything.”
“Most people see us after something bad has happened. So this is something where we’re just there to hang out with them,” Officer Wood said. “It’s positive, the kids can crawl around the cars. We hand out some stickers and have a tee shirt gun. We’re going to shoot out some tee shirts if the kids are around.”
There were many other first responders out there as well, including firefighters, emergency managers and representatives from Crime Stoppers.
